Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1998 (Premiers Crus)
฿33,829
Baron Philippe de Rothschild pioneered château-bottling in 1924 — a practice now universal across Bordeaux — and it is that same obsession with provenance control that defines every bottle leaving Mouton's iconic 100-metre Grand Chai. The 1998 vintage arrives from the Plateau de Mouton, a gravel croupe rising to 27 m in northern Pauillac, where Günzian gravel descending over 5 m over iron-rich clay-limestone marl delivers the drainage and heat retention that sustains Cabernet Sauvignon at this latitude — producing the tannic density and aromatic concentration Mouton is built upon.
Vinification proceeds through hand-harvested, hand-sorted fruit fermented in oak vats — one of the last Médoc châteaux to retain wood as primary fermentation vessels — with malolactic in tank. The wine then ages 19–22 months in 100% new French oak barrique, fined with egg white before château-bottling. Only the finest parcels, at most 50% of total estate production, qualify for the Grand Vin label. The 1998 is the only First Growth whose bottle is simultaneously a fine-art collectible, carrying that year's commissioned artist label. A mature expression now entering its secondary aromatic phase of cedar, graphite, and tobacco over black fruit, with a drinking window extending well into the late 2020s for those seeking full tertiary development.
