The 2018 vintage marks a quiet watershed at Ducru-Beaucaillou: it is the estate's first fully organic harvest, certified HVE3 and ISO 14001 — a deliberate pivot by CEO Bruno Borie that coincided with one of the Médoc's hottest growing seasons on record, proving that agronomic restraint and climatic generosity can coexist. The château sits at the southern end of Saint-Julien AOC, its core 50-hectare block resting on a 6–8 metre bed of Günz gravel — quartz pebbles, lydian jasper, flint, and agatoids deposited by the ancient Garonne roughly two million years ago over Oligocene mud and Eocene limestone. This exceptional gravel depth forces vine roots deep, concentrating flavour while the Gironde estuary's four daily tidal movements tempered the 2018 heat, preserving structural tension. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon / 15% Merlot, harvested manually with multiple sorting passes including optical selection, vinified parcel-by-parcel in variably sized stainless steel tanks with a minimum seven-day maceration, then aged 18–20 months in 100% new 225-litre French oak barriques from five cooperages — a counter-cultural commitment to full new oak that Bruno Borie has maintained against the broader Bordeaux trend toward reduction. Only 27% of total vineyard output is selected for the Grand Vin, a selectivity rate rare even among classified growths. In 2018, that rigour yields a wine of uncommon opulence for Ducru: sleek, concentrated, and rich, yet the graphite-laced linearity of the Günz terroir keeps the architecture intact. Drink 2028–2055.
