−11%When Decanter awarded the 2010 Château Margaux a perfect 20/20 en primeur, the consensus was unambiguous: this is a wine of structure and precision, not flattery. Where the 2009 seduced with opulence, the 2010 withheld — dense, tannic, and architecturally severe in youth, demanding patience measured in decades.
The fruit originates from the estate's 25-hectare plateau of deep Quaternary Garonne gravel over a Tertiary limestone and clay-marl terrace — among the Haut-Médoc's most exceptional drainage profiles. The Lestonnat stream assists man-made drainage, keeping vine stress calibrated; the result is the restrained vigour and concentrated berry that defines Margaux's signature finesse over Pauillac-style power.
Hand-harvested and hand-sorted, the 2010 was fermented parcel-by-parcel across nearly 100 vats — some as small as 25 hL — allowing micro-vinification precision. Aged 18–24 months in 100% new French oak, a significant share of those barrels coopered at the estate's own on-site cooperage, a rarity among First Growths that gives the team direct control over toast profile and grain selection. Malolactic fermentation for free-run wine occurred in vat; press wine completed MLF in barrel.
Only roughly one-third of the harvest entered the Grand Vin — the remainder redirected to Pavillon Rouge or declassified — a selection rate that makes the 2010's density all the more remarkable given the vintage's naturally austere tannic structure.
