−10%Château Margaux is the only First Growth whose name is identical to its appellation — a distinction earned at Napoleon III's 1855 Classification, where it was the sole estate awarded a perfect 20/20. That singular identity is rooted in a 25-hectare plateau of deep Quaternary Garonne gravel over a Tertiary limestone-and-clay-marl terrace, the drainage so efficient that vine vigour is structurally suppressed, concentrating aromatic intensity rather than mass. The Lestonnat stream and the Landes forest to the west moderate the maritime microclimate, while select Cabernet Sauvignon parcels exceeding 80 years of age contribute the skeletal architecture of the Grand Vin.
Vinification proceeds parcel by parcel across nearly 100 vats — some as small as 25 hL — allowing micro-terroir precision before the final assemblage. Malolactic fermentation for free-run wine occurs in vat; press wine completes MLF in barrel. The wine then ages 18–24 months in 100% new French oak, a significant proportion of it coopered on-site at the estate's own cooperage — a rarity among the five First Growths that gives the team direct control over toast level and grain selection. The Grand Vin is bottled unfined and unfiltered at the château.
The 2018 vintage is characterised by high alcohol held in tension by equally high acidity — a combination the estate describes as among the best it has ever produced. More approachable in its early window than the structured 2016, it nonetheless carries the density and acid backbone for extended cellaring. Rigorous parcel selection — only roughly one-third of the harvest enters the Grand Vin — is reflected in a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate's certified-organic (since 2017) vineyards.
