Grand Cru.
Château Olivier's origins trace to a medieval hunting lodge used by Edward the Black Prince in the 14th century, and the estate has been producing classified Pessac-Léognan on the same deep gravel terraces ever since. The vineyard sits on a classic Günzian gravel plateau — rounded quartzite pebbles over clay-limestone subsoil — that drains aggressively, stresses the vine roots downward, and concentrates phenolics without sacrificing freshness in the cool, forest-sheltered microclimate of Léognan. The 2020 red is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend aged in French oak barriques, a regime that builds the cedar and graphite frame characteristic of the appellation. Pessac-Léognan's gravel acts as a heat reservoir, and 2020's warm, dry growing season pushed full phenolic ripeness while the Atlantic influence preserved acidity — a combination that rarely aligns so cleanly. What distinguishes Olivier among classified Pessac-Léognan reds is its position directly adjacent to the Léognan forest, which moderates afternoon temperatures and preserves a mineral, almost smoky tension that warmer-sited peers lose. The 2020 vintage is drinking well now but has the structural density to develop further through 2030–2035.
