Despite sitting on the Bages plateau between Pauillac and Saint-Julien, close to Château Latour, Haut-Bages Libéral has farmed organically and biodynamically since achieving certification in 2019 — an unusual commitment for a classified-growth Médoc estate of its size.
Producer history
The Libéral family, who built their fortune as wine intermediaries, settled the estate and gave it their name in the 1700s; it was ranked a Cinquième Cru in the 1855 Classification. The Cruse family (also then owners of Château Pontet-Canet) undertook major replanting around 1960. The Villars-Merlaut family acquired the property in 1982-83; Claire Villars-Lurton, granddaughter of Jacques Merlaut, has managed the estate since 2000 alongside her husband Gonzague Lurton, and the estate has been steadily restored to form.
Signature pairings

- Dark chocolate and black cherry tart — The wine's own dark chocolate and black cherry notes echo a bittersweet chocolate-fruit dessert, a flavor-bridging match rather than a classic sweet pairing.
Château Haut-Bages Liberal is named after the Liberal family, who founded the estate in the 18th century, and its terroir is nothing short of exceptional. Half of the vineyard lies adjacent to Château Latour, and the other half sits on the limestone-rich plateau of Bages. Today, the estate is run by Claire Villars-Lurton, a fierce advocate for agro-ecology and biodynamics, having achieved organic certification in 2019 and full biodynamic certification shortly after.
This is a wine that feels "unfiltered" in its expression of place. It eschews heavy makeup or excessive oak in favor of a raw, energetic beauty. It is a Pauillac for purists—structured, saline, and vibrating with life—proving that the greatest luxury in wine is a healthy, living vineyard.
