−6%When Jean-Michel Cazes launched a 15-year modernisation programme in 1975, the deliberate target was full phenolic ripeness — Lynch-Bages was famously among the last estates to harvest in Pauillac, a choice that defines every bottle. The Bages plateau, south-southwest of Pauillac town, sits on deep Garonne gravel over limestone sub-strata, the product of slow Pyrenean erosion; free drainage forces roots deep while the Gironde estuary moderates temperature extremes, amplifying the concentration that late harvesting delivers. Vinification proceeds parcel-by-parcel across 80 stainless-steel vats, with malolactic fermentation split — one-third in vat, two-thirds in barrel — before 15–18 months in French oak barriques at 75% new oak. From 2015, Lynch-Bages deployed the Winegrid in-barrel monitoring system — the first Bordeaux estate to do so — tracking alcohol, sugar, colour, and temperature in real time, a technological commitment with no parallel among its Pauillac peers. Despite its official Cinquième Cru Classé rank, Liv-Ex market data consistently places Lynch-Bages at Second Growth performance levels. The 2018 hot, dry growing season aligned precisely with the house's ripe-harvest philosophy: concentrated blackcurrant and dark berry, cushioned tannins, and the structural density to reward patience from 2026 through the late 2040s.
