Echo de Lynch Bages AOC Pauillac 2020

Echo de Lynch Bages is the second wine of a Cinquième Cru Classé that the market has long repriced as a Super Second — a gap between official rank and real-world performance that Jean-Michel Cazes's 15-year modernisation programme, begun in 1975, made impossible to ignore. The 2020 carries an additional distinction: it is the first vintage produced in the gravity-flow winery completed that same year, designed by Chien Chung 'Didi' Pei, where parcel-by-parcel fermentation across 80 temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats replaced the previous cellar's constraints.

The fruit originates from the Bages plateau, south-southwest of Pauillac, where deep Garonne gravel — deposited by slow Pyrenean erosion — sits over limestone sub-strata. That gravel profile forces vine roots deep, restricts water retention, and concentrates phenolics; the Gironde estuary moderates temperature swings that would otherwise compromise ripeness in cooler years. In 2020, a sun-ripened growing season delivered powerful tannins matching 2018 and 2019 in density, while retaining freshness and good acidity — an unusual combination for the vintage. Malolactic fermentation was split: one-third in vat, two-thirds in barrel, preserving textural complexity. Aging ran in French oak barriques at 75% new oak for approximately 15–18 months, the Winegrid in-barrel monitoring system — first deployed at Lynch-Bages in 2015, a Bordeaux first — tracking colour and sugar evolution in real time. As the second wine, Echo draws on declassified parcels and younger vines, delivering the house's cassis-tobacco-graphite signature at an earlier drinking window than the grand vin. Drink 2025–2033.
