When André Mentzelopoulos acquired Château Margaux in 1977 for roughly 72 million francs, the estate's defining asset was already ancient: a 25-hectare plateau of deep Quaternary Garonne gravel laid over a Tertiary limestone-clay-marl terrace — the same 'La Mothe' gravel mounds that drain so aggressively they force Cabernet Sauvignon roots deep enough to produce concentration without weight. The Lestonnat stream and the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary complete a microclimate that consistently delivers aromatic precision over brute power. The 2001 Grand Vin is built on that foundation: a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend (typically 75–89% CS, completed by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc) drawn from hand-harvested, hand-sorted fruit, fermented parcel-by-parcel across vats as small as 25 hL, with malolactic fermentation in vat for free-run wine. It then aged 18–24 months in 100% new French oak, a significant share of those barrels coopered on-site at the estate's own cooperage — a practice unique among the five First Growths, giving the team direct control over toast level and grain selection. Only roughly one-third of the harvest qualified for the Grand Vin label. The 2001 Left Bank growing season delivered a cool, late-ripening year that rewarded patience: expect a wine of linear structure and restrained fruit density, now entering a window of secondary complexity, with a drinking horizon extending well into the 2030s.
