When André Mentzelopoulos acquired Château Margaux in 1977 for roughly 72 million francs, the estate had fallen into neglect — his immediate investment in parcel-by-parcel vinification infrastructure is precisely why the 2000 Grand Vin exists in its current form: nearly 100 individual vats, some as small as 25 hL, allowing micro-vinification of each plot before the final assemblage. The vineyard's crown is a 25-hectare plateau of deep Quaternary Garonne gravel laid over a limestone and clay-marl Tertiary terrace — among the most freely draining outcrops in the Haut-Médoc — where the gravel mounds known as La Mothe rise above the flat Médoc plain, concentrating heat and stressing roots into the limestone below. Fermentation proceeds in both oak and stainless steel vats; free-run wine completes malolactic in vat while press wine undergoes MLF in barrel. The Grand Vin then ages 18–24 months in 100% new French oak, a significant share of it coopered on-site at the estate's own cooperage — a distinction no other First Growth maintains — giving the team direct control over toast levels and stave seasoning. Only roughly one-third of the total harvest is selected for the Grand Vin, the remainder redirected to Pavillon Rouge or declassified entirely. The 2000 vintage in Margaux delivered a warm, dry growing season with exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon ripeness, producing a wine of deep colour, firm but polished tannin structure, and the aromatic precision that defines this commune over its Pauillac peers. Drinking window: 2010–2040.
