When Jean Laussac-Fourcaud replanted the estate in the 1860s with Cabernet Franc as the structural backbone — locally called 'Bouchet' — the decision was considered audacious on a Right Bank where Merlot was already king. That single choice still defines every bottle made here. The 42-hectare vineyard sits on quaternary alluvium deposited by the Isle river, non-calcareous soils that divide into three identities: roughly 40% gravel over deep blue clay (home to Cabernet Franc vines planted in 1920, now over a century old), 40% deep gravel, and 20% sandy clay. This flat alluvial terrain sits at the north-western edge of Saint-Émilion, physically bordering Pomerol — a borderline position that produces a wine neither appellation can fully claim. All 56 plots are vinified separately in temperature-controlled, gravity-fed concrete vats sized to individual plot tonnage, with malolactic fermentation completed in tank; the Grand Vin is assembled by tasting alone, with no prescriptive varietal formula. Aging runs 16–18 months in 100% new French oak — Tronçais and Bercé forest barrels from 180–350-year-old trees, replaced entirely each vintage, held at a constant 14°C, racked manually through the bung hole using nitrogen. Cheval Blanc is the only First Growth-equivalent on the Right Bank where Cabernet Franc, not Merlot, anchors the blend — a structural transgression that has no peer in Bordeaux. The 2008 vintage is not among the library's scored benchmarks, but sits between the concentrated 2009 and the earlier decade; at this stage it is entering a generous drinking window with the Cabernet Franc's silky tannin architecture fully resolved.
