−5%Pomerol carries no official classification, yet Château Pétrus commands prices that exceed every 1855 Médoc First Growth — a status built entirely on a geological accident: a 40-million-year-old blue smectite clay boutonnière rising to 40 metres at the plateau's apex, covering roughly 7.8 of the estate's 11.4 hectares. No neighbouring estate sits atop the same continuous clay lens. That iron-rich, water-retentive subsoil — overlaid by 60–80 cm of dark organic topsoil — is the sole reason Merlot achieves the structural depth here that Cabernet Sauvignon commands elsewhere in Bordeaux.
Harvest is compressed into 2–3 afternoons only, avoiding morning dew that would dilute must concentration. Fruit is 100% destemmed, optically sorted, and fermented in temperature-controlled concrete vats on native yeasts — no saignée, no inoculation. The wine ages 18–20 months in French oak, approximately 50% new (barrels steamed before use), then bottled unfiltered at natural ABV. No second wine exists; declassified fruit is sold anonymously as generic Pomerol.
The 2011 Bordeaux growing season was marked by a warm, dry summer interrupted by September rain — a vintage that rewarded estates with exceptional drainage. Pétrus's elevated clay plateau, which sheds excess water precisely because of its topographic position, was structurally advantaged. The 2011 drinks earlier than the monolithic 2010 or 2009, with a drinking window extending through 2040+. No vintage score is confirmed in available sources for this year.
