Founded in 1815 by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, Montrose achieved Second Growth status within just 40 years — a speed unmatched across the entire 1855 classification — and the Charmolüe family made it among the first Bordeaux châteaux to bottle at the estate, documented from 1904. That early commitment to provenance integrity persists today under the Bouygues brothers, who invested a reported €20 million between 2007 and 2013 in a gravity-flow winery and a 1,000 m² barrel hall without softening the estate's structural DNA.

The vineyard is a rare 95-hectare single block on a gravelly croupe in the south-eastern corner of Saint-Estèphe, roughly 800 metres from the Gironde estuary. Soils are deep coarse gravel — sourced geologically from the Pyrenees and Massif Central, exceeding two metres in depth — over a clay-marl subsoil, with a south-easterly aspect. The estuary's thermal mass suppresses both spring frost and summer heat spikes, preserving phenolic precision in the Cabernet Sauvignon, some vines dating to 1932.

Parcel-by-parcel fermentation feeds into 18 months aging in French oak barriques at 60% new wood, a regime that frames rather than overwhelms the wine's mineral-graphite core. The Grand Vin represents only 35–40% of total estate production, ensuring rigorous selection. The 2017 vintage blend runs approximately 60–65% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot completing the assemblage.

Where peers have migrated toward earlier-drinking profiles, Montrose deliberately retains tannic density and a graphite-mineral backbone that demands extended cellaring — the defining transgression of the modern Médoc era. No vintage notes are confirmed for 2017 in the brand library; the wine's structural architecture places it firmly in the estate's long-aging tradition.
