Louis Roederer Brut Vintage 2014
฿5,205
The 2014 growing season nearly broke Champagne — a rain-soaked summer that only relented when north-easterly winds arrived in September, concentrating dry extract and locking in high natural acidity across Roederer's estate parcels. That meteorological rescue is the structural backbone of this wine. Sourced entirely from Roederer's own 240-hectare estate — a grower-level commitment almost without precedent among large Reims maisons — the blend draws on Pinot Noir from shallow chalk topsoil over pure chalk bedrock at Verzenay and Verzy, and Chardonnay from limestone mid-slopes at Avize and Cramant, each parcel vinified separately in small stainless-steel tanks or oak vats. The blend is approximately 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, with ~30% of the blend aged in used oak barrels without malolactic fermentation — a deliberate choice by Chef de Cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon to preserve the vintage's inherent tension and build aging architecture. After an average of four years on lees plus six months post-disgorgement, the wine carries the chalk-driven mineral compression that the 2014 season uniquely delivered. What sets this apart: the combination of a fully estate-sourced vintage blend and partial MLF-block in a difficult year produces a Champagne with the structural austerity of a grower wine at maison scale. Drink now through 2030+.
