Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Nuits Saint Georges La Charmotte
฿5,900
Thibault Liger-Belair is the first vigneron in nine generations of a family that once owned La Tâche Grand Cru — sold to DRC in 1929 — and operated exclusively as a négociant since 1720. When he founded the domaine in 2001, he made a deliberate break: farming the land himself, biodynamically, with horses pulling the plows. La Charmotte sits north of the Nuits-Saint-Georges village on soils of 30–40 cm clay over solid limestone bedrock, a profile that retains just enough moisture to buffer the warm season while the limestone drives the wine's mineral tension. In 2020 — a warm, early vintage — Thibault consciously pulled back on extraction, prioritising freshness and energy over concentration; the result is a village wine that punches above its classification in precision. Hand-harvested with triple sorting, fermented with native yeast in open-top vessels, and aged 14–18 months in barrel with a maximum one-third new oak (lightly charred, 5–7 minutes, from wood dried a minimum three years), the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. What sets La Charmotte apart at village level is the same cellar discipline applied to the domaine's Grand Crus: no racking, no aeration, sulfites sourced from a natural Polish mine. Winehog notes the 2020 shows fine promise, with the vintage's warmth held in check by the domaine's infusion-over-extraction philosophy.
