50&50 Toscana IGT
฿฿฿
SaleAvignonesi's transgression: In 1988, the Montepulciano house released 50&50—a deliberate rejection of Chianti orthodoxy. Equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot, vinified separately then married, it announced that Tuscan terroir could speak through non-traditional proportions.
Site: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, southeastern Tuscany. Clay-limestone soils at 250–350 meters elevation, with morning fog from the Val d'Orcia moderating afternoon heat. The aspect favors slow ripening and phenolic maturity without overextraction.
Technique: Separate fermentation of Sangiovese and Merlot in temperature-controlled stainless steel, each varietal's native yeast completing dry fermentation. 12 months in French oak (mix of new and neutral), followed by 6 months in bottle before release. No fining; minimal filtration preserves tannin structure. Alcohol typically 13.5–14%.
Special feature: The 50/50 ratio is not a marketing gesture—it is a deliberate architectural choice. Sangiovese provides acidity, savory tannin, and mineral spine; Merlot contributes mid-palate weight and ripe-fruit counterpoint. The blend matures as a unified expression, not a compromise.
Drinking window: 2–8 years from vintage.
