Barolo "Campe" DOCG

From our sommelier team
A 100% Nebbiolo Barolo DOCG from the Campè vineyard, a four-hectare single site surrounding La Spinetta's Grinzane Cavour cellar, sourced from vines 50+ years old. The wine is powerful and aromatic, with violets, blackcurrant, blueberry and rose petal on the nose, layered with graphite, smoke, leather and underbrush; smooth tannins support a dense, long, fruit-forward palate typical of the modern-leaning La Spinetta house style.
Vinous critic Antonio Galloni has scored recent vintages of this wine consistently in the low-to-mid 90s (e.g., 97 points for 2016, 94 for 2012 and 2017), reflecting La Spinetta's reputation for producing riper, more overtly fruit-driven and modern-style Barolo than many traditionalist Langhe producers, aided by partial French oak aging (roughly 20% new).
Producer history
La Spinetta was founded in 1977 by Giuseppe ('Pin') and Lidia Rivetti in Castagnole Lanze, initially built on Moscato d'Asti, where the family were early producers of single-vineyard Moscato (Bricco Quaglia, Biancospino). The estate expanded into serious red winemaking with a dedicated cellar at the Campè vineyard in Grinzane Cavour in the Barolo zone, and the winery is now run by Pin's sons, brothers Bruno, Carlo and Giorgio Rivetti, who also expanded the family's holdings into Barbaresco and, from 2001, Tuscany.
Signature pairings
- Braised beef short ribs in Barolo sauce (Brasato al Barolo) — A classic regional pairing: the wine's tannin and dark fruit stand up to the richness of slow-braised beef, while its acidity cuts the sauce.
- Truffle risotto (Risotto al tartufo) — The wine's earthy, underbrush and truffle-adjacent aromatics mirror the dish, and its structure balances the risotto's creaminess.
- Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano and hard cheeses — High tannin and acidity cut through the fat and salt of aged hard cheese, a traditional Piedmontese pairing for structured Nebbiolo.
La Spinetta's Barolo "Campe" DOCG is a classically structured Piedmont red built on 100% Nebbiolo from the renowned Barolo zone. The 2014 vintage displays the varietal's signature dark plum and black cherry fruit, layered with cedar, tobacco, and subtle rose florals. Medium-high acidity and tannin provide backbone and aging potential, while tertiary notes of leather and mineral earth emerge on the palate. A food-friendly yet serious expression suited to grilled red meats, braised beef, and aged cheeses.
