The 2022 Ornellaia, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, shows concentrated dark fruit and vibrant energy from a hot, dry growing season balanced by beneficial late-season rain, giving a wine of ripeness with underlying freshness.
This bottling carries the 17th edition of Ornellaia's 'Vendemmia d'Artista' program: Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou interpreted the 2022 vintage under the theme 'La Determinazione' (Determination), with a label of concentric circles in multiple colors and a design inspired by a plant flowering through stone — one artist-labeled bottle is included per six-bottle case, with charitable proceeds benefiting the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
Producer history
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, younger brother of Piero Antinori, in the coastal Bolgheri appellation of Tuscany; its flagship Cabernet-Merlot blend debuted with the 1985 vintage. Ownership passed to Robert Mondavi in 1999, then to Constellation Brands after its 2005 acquisition of Mondavi, which sold the estate the same year to the Frescobaldi family, Tuscany's other historic winemaking dynasty. Frescobaldi has owned and operated Ornellaia since 2005.
