Montepulciano D' Abruzzo Cerasuolo DOC
฿
The Story: Cerasuolo—meaning "cherry-colored"—is Abruzzo's signature rosé style, born from winemakers who refused to treat Montepulciano as a red-only grape. Gran Sasso's expression anchors this tradition in the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC zone, where clay-limestone soils and continental-influenced elevation (300–500m) create conditions that favor precision over extraction.
Site & Soil: The Montepulciano d'Abruzzo appellation sits on the eastern slope of the Apennines, where Pliocene clay and limestone substrates drain moderately, concentrating mineral expression while moderating alcohol accumulation. Elevation and aspect expose vines to diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity.
Technique: Montepulciano fruit undergoes brief skin contact (typically 12–24 hours)—long enough to extract color and tannin structure, short enough to preserve freshness. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel preserves aromatic volatility. The result is a dry rosé (residual sugar <2g/L) with measurable tannin presence, distinguishing it from lighter Provence-style expressions.
Special Feature: Cerasuolo's legal minimum alcohol is 11.5% ABV, and its tannin backbone permits brief aging (1–3 years) without oxidation risk—uncommon for rosé. This wine drinks as a food rosé, not an aperitif category.
Drinking Window: Current release; optimal through 2–3 years from vintage.
