The Lowlands occupy the southern belt of Scotland below the Highland line. Historically the region favoured triple distillation, producing lighter, more delicate whiskies than their Highland and Islay counterparts. Active distilleries include Auchentoshan (the only Scottish distillery still triple-distilling every drop), Glenkinchie (Edinburgh's malt), and Bladnoch (Scotland's most southerly distillery). New wave producers like Kingsbarns and Lindores Abbey have joined the ranks. Lowland malts are typically grassy, floral, and citrus-noted — ideal aperitif whiskies.
