Kamptal takes its name from the Kamp river valley north of the Danube, centred around the town of Langenlois — Austria's largest wine-producing municipality. The region benefits from a convergence of two geological zones: warm loess soils on the eastern slopes (producing broader, fruit-driven wines) and cool primary rock (gneiss, schist) on the western terraces (yielding mineral, structured expressions). Kamptal was among the first Austrian regions to adopt the DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) appellation system in 2008. Top vineyard sites include Heiligenstein (a celebrated Riesling cru), Lamm, and Kogelberg. Key producers are Schloss Gobelsburg, Brundlmayer, Hiedler, and Jurtschitsch.
