Central Otago in the South Island is the world's southernmost wine region (45th parallel) and the only major wine region in New Zealand with a continental rather than maritime climate. The combination of extreme UV levels, massive diurnal temperature variation (up to 20°C), and poor schist soils produces Pinot Noir of remarkable intensity, dark fruit concentration, and mineral drive. Bannockburn, Gibbston Valley, Bendigo, and Wanaka are key subregions, each with distinct character. The region is spectacularly beautiful, with vineyards set against mountains and lakes. Felton Road, Mt Difficulty, and Burn Cottage are benchmark producers.
