When Rafael Cañizares and Jorge Ordóñez founded Bodegas Volver in 2004, their Alicante ambition centred on a deliberate act of rescue: sourcing ungrafted Monastrell vines planted between 1935 and 1970 from shallow limestone and rocky soils wedged between the Sierra de Salinas, Sierra de Umbría, and Sierra de La Sima — plots most producers had long abandoned as uneconomical. At 600–750 m elevation, these near-desert sites receive minimal rainfall, forcing root systems deep into fractured rock with almost no organic matter, compressing yields to as little as 1.5 kg per plant and concentrating every compound in the berry.

Triga carries the Alicante Singular sub-designation within DO Alicante, a classification reserved for wines of demonstrably superior site expression — a tier above standard appellation fruit. The blend pairs Monastrell with Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), hand-harvested and sorted on a selection table before primary fermentation in open-top stainless steel tanks at ~28°C with indigenous yeast; malolactic fermentation is completed in French oak barrels to knit structure into fruit rather than strip it out.

What separates Triga from virtually every peer in Levante is the combination of pre-phylloxera ungrafted stock, sub-1.5 kg/plant yields, and a formal singular-site classification on limestone sierra soils — a convergence that produces density without the overripe heaviness common to lower-altitude Monastrell. The 2020 vintage is not covered by confirmed winery notes, but the elevation and dry-farming regime consistently moderate ripening, preserving tension alongside concentration.
