J. Lohr Carol Vineyards St. Helena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

When Jerry Lohr built his reputation across 4,000+ Central Coast acres, he quietly planted a 30-acre foothold in St. Helena — Carol's Vineyard — a deliberate outlier in a portfolio defined by Paso Robles and Arroyo Seco. That decision now produces one of the brand's most site-specific expressions.

St. Helena's clay-loam soils sit at the warmer, northern end of Napa Valley's valley floor, where the Mayacamas and Vaca ranges compress the diurnal range less dramatically than Paso Robles, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly toward full phenolic maturity while clay retention keeps vine stress moderate through dry summers.

The fruit is vinified in stainless steel before transfer to 60-gallon American oak barrels — predominantly medium and medium-plus toasted Missouri and Minnesota oak with toasted heads — at 20% new oak, the same regime applied to the Seven Oaks program. Petit Verdot is planted alongside Cabernet Sauvignon at Carol's Vineyard, providing structural depth and color density to the blend.

What distinguishes this bottling within the J. Lohr range is its St. Helena AVA single-vineyard provenance — the only Napa fruit in a portfolio exceeding 1.8 million cases, giving it a traceability that most wines at this scale cannot claim.

The 2021 vintage delivered classic structure with fruit-forward character on release; the clay-loam base and American oak framework suggest a drinking window extending comfortably through 2030.
