The 2019 growing season in Napa Valley was cool and extended, producing layered, structured reds with natural freshness rather than heat-driven concentration. Fruit is drawn from estate sites spanning 11 Napa sub-appellations, including the rocky, well-drained hillside soils of Suscol Springs Ranch and the original Winery Ranch in Rutherford, where proximity to the Napa River and Mayacamas Mountains moderates diurnal swings and preserves acidity. All fruit is hand-harvested at night — a practice in place since 2004 — then passed through an optical berry sorter, hand-sorted, destemmed, and given a pre-fermentation cold soak to soften skins and calibrate tannin texture before fermentation.
