Vineyards The Discussion Napa Valley
฿฿฿
Duckhorn Vineyards launched The Discussion in 2005 as a deliberate counterpoint to single-vineyard orthodoxy — the name itself references the ongoing debate about whether blending across Napa's finest sites produces something greater than any one parcel alone. That philosophical wager is answered in the glass every vintage. Rutherford's benchland soils — deep alluvial gravel over clay loam deposited by the Napa River — deliver the appellation's signature tannin structure and the mineral grip locals call Rutherford Dust, while moderate diurnal swings preserve natural acidity in the Cabernet Sauvignon backbone. The blend draws on multiple estate and contracted Napa Valley vineyards, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec in varying proportions by vintage. Aging proceeds in French oak barriques, a significant portion new, for approximately 18 months, building texture without obscuring the site-driven mineral thread. What separates The Discussion from Duckhorn's broader Napa tier is its explicit multi-appellation blending mandate — fruit sources shift vintage to vintage to chase quality rather than consistency of address. The wine rewards 3–8 years of cellaring from release, with primary dark fruit gradually yielding to savory, earthy complexity.
