Onda is Dana Estates' Napa Valley-appellation Cabernet Sauvignon, made not from one site but by blending fruit from several vineyard sources across the valley. The wine draws inspiration from the classic Napa Valley vintages of the 1960s and 1970s, which were made in a first-growth Bordeaux style — blending a diversity of sites to create complex wines with structure, freshness and balance. In the glass it shows lively aromatics of wild blueberry, fresh bramble and exotic florals, with deeper dried Italian herb and subtle oak spice. The palate runs to vibrant black cherry and ripe raspberry, with silky, polished tannins and a juicy finish.
The key thing to understand is that Onda is a blended wine by design, not a declassified version of something else. Dana's estate vineyards sit in very different places — Helms on the Rutherford bench at the foot of the Mayacamas, Lotus on the eastern hillside below Howell Mountain, Hershey up on Howell Mountain, Montagna on Pritchard Hill — and each has its own soil signature. Onda's purpose is harmony across sites rather than the singular voice of any one of them, so read it as a house style statement rather than a terroir study.
Producer history
Dana Estates is based in Rutherford, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains, on a property whose stone winery was originally built in 1883 by the German viticulturist H.W. Helms; the modern estate was established in 2005 and restored the site. The estate today farms a set of distinct Napa vineyards including Helms in Rutherford, Lotus on the eastern hillside below Howell Mountain, Hershey on Howell Mountain at around 1,800 feet, and Montagna on Pritchard Hill.
