When Baron James Mayer de Rothschild purchased this estate at auction in 1868 for 4.4 million francs, he inherited not only Pauillac's most celebrated terroir but also a unique regulatory anomaly: a 4.5-hectare Cabernet Sauvignon plot in the lieu-dit Blanquet, technically within AOC Saint-Estèphe, legally folded into the Grand Vin under a dérogation held continuously since that acquisition — a privilege no other First Growth possesses. The vineyard sits on deep fine gravel up to 10 metres in key parcels, layered over aeolian black sand and tertiary limestone, with the oldest plot, La Gravière, planted in 1886. The Gironde estuary moderates diurnal swings and suppresses frost risk, preserving the aromatic delicacy that separates Lafite from the muscularity of Latour or the opulence of Mouton. Winemaking proceeds parcel-by-parcel across roughly 100 separate vats — traditional oak, stainless steel, and concrete — with a cold pre-fermentation maceration of ~5 days, alcoholic fermentation at 28–30°C, and total maceration of 20–22 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in small stainless-steel foudres; the Grand Vin selection is finalised the following March. Aging runs 18–20 months in 100% new French oak barriques produced at La Tonnellerie des Domaines, Lafite's own on-site cooperage — giving the château direct control over the cedar and graphite character that defines the house style. The 2020 vintage is not individually scored in the brand library, but Lafite's average Wine Advocate rating across 16 vintages since 1995 stands at 96.5 points; the estate's consistent selection discipline and organic conversion (begun 2021) point to a drinking window of 2030–2055+.
