Le Clarence de Haut-Brion takes its name from Clarence Dillon, the American financier who rescued the estate in 1935 — and the second label carries the full weight of a house that pioneered stainless steel fermentation in Bordeaux as early as 1961, decades before peers followed. That institutional boldness shapes how this wine is made: grapes from the estate's Günzian gravel croupes in Pessac — ancient Pleistocene-era quartz pebbles over clay, at elevations reaching 27 m — are hand-harvested, sorted, and fermented in Haut-Brion's proprietary double-skinned stainless steel vats using selected Davis 522 yeast, with maceration of 14–18 days and gentle remontage. The surrounding urban fabric of Pessac creates a measurably warmer microclimate, enabling earlier, more reliable ripening than anywhere else on the Left Bank. Blending is completed unusually early — by November or December of the harvest year, before oak influence begins, preserving the terroir's native savouriness. Aging follows in French oak barrels from the estate's own on-site cooperage, one of only three in Bordeaux, with new-oak percentage calibrated to vintage weight. The wine is bottled unfiltered. What sets Le Clarence apart within the second-label category is its direct access to the same Günzian terroir and cooperage infrastructure as the grand vin — no peer second label operates its own barrel-making facility. The 2019 vintage, shaped by a cool summer and ideal ripening conditions, delivers superb balance of richness and freshness, with silky tannins and subtle minerality; drinking window 2027–2055.
