Le Clarence de Haut-Brion takes its name from Clarence Dillon, the American financier who purchased the estate in 1935 and set in motion the modern era of what is arguably Bordeaux's oldest continuously operating grand cru — a property first documented under the name 'Aubrion' in 1521. As the second wine of the only First Growth outside the Médoc, Le Clarence draws from the same rare Günzian gravel soils: ancient Pleistocene-era quartz pebbles over clay, rising to 27 m elevation across two distinct croupes in Pessac. The surrounding urban fabric creates a warmer microclimate that enables earlier, more reliable ripening than any other Left Bank estate — a structural advantage that shows in the wine's characteristic savouriness and textural suppleness.

Grapes are harvested by hand, fermented in Haut-Brion's proprietary double-skinned stainless steel vats (the estate introduced stainless steel to Bordeaux in 1961), with maceration of 14–18 days and gentle pump-overs. Blending is completed unusually early — by November or December of the harvest year, before oak influence begins — then aged 18–24 months in French oak barrels from the estate's own on-site cooperage, one of only three in Bordeaux. The wine is bottled unfiltered. The higher Merlot proportion relative to Médoc peers delivers a rounded, silky texture that distinguishes the Haut-Brion house style even at second-wine level. The 2020 vintage earned 96 points from Decanter, described as 'concentrated, powerful and precise,' with a drinking window of 2030–2055.
