Chateau Haut-Brion 1er Grand Cru Classe 2020

When Jean de Pontac constructed the château at Pessac in 1549, he was building on ground that no other Left Bank estate can replicate: Günzian gravel — ancient Pleistocene-era quartz pebbles deposited over clay — the only true expression of this soil type on the Left Bank. The surrounding urban fabric of Pessac acts as a heat sink, advancing ripening by days and making Haut-Brion's harvest among the earliest in Bordeaux each year.

Fermentation takes place in proprietary double-skinned stainless steel vats (Haut-Brion pioneered stainless steel in Bordeaux in 1961), with maceration of 14–18 days using gentle pump-overs and selected Davis 522 yeast. The blend — approximately 45% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc — is assembled unusually early, before oak influence begins, typically by November or December of the harvest year. Aging runs 18–24 months in French oak from the estate's own cooperage, one of only three on-site cooperages in Bordeaux, with new oak percentage calibrated to vintage weight. The wine is bottled unfiltered.

What no peer does: Haut-Brion carries dual classification — the 1855 Médoc list and the 1959 Graves Classification — as a singular exception granted on merit alone. The 2020, rated 96 points by Decanter and described as 'concentrated, powerful and precise,' is built for a long arc: drink 2030–2055.
