Chateau De Beaucastel Chateauneuf de Pape
฿฿฿
Château de Beaucastel has stewarded its 32-hectare estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 1909, establishing itself as a custodian of the appellation's traditional polyculture model rather than the monovariety trend that dominates the region.
The vineyard sits on the left bank of the Rhône, where large rolled stones (galets) and clay-limestone soils absorb and radiate heat, creating the thermal intensity that defines the appellation's ripeness. Elevation ranges 80–120 metres, with north-facing parcels providing crucial acidity moderation in this warm continental climate.
This expression employs all 13 permitted Châteauneuf varieties — Grenache forms the backbone, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault providing structure and complexity. Fermentation occurs in concrete vats, a deliberate rejection of oak that preserves the mineral and stone-fruit character of the terroir. Post-fermentation aging extends through concrete and large-format vessels, avoiding the oak-forward profile common among peers. Malolactic fermentation completes naturally.
The 13-variety blend represents Beaucastel's refusal to simplify: where competitors have narrowed to 2–3 varieties for commercial clarity, this house maintains the full aromatic and textural complexity of traditional Châteauneuf production.
Drinking window: 2–15 years from vintage. Current releases show full mid-palate weight with integrated tannin structure and mineral persistence.
