Cakebread Benchland Select Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
฿9,800
When Jack and Dolores Cakebread founded in Rutherford in 1973, they embedded a resident chef and the American Harvest Workshop into the winery by 1985 — a culinary philosophy that has governed every winemaking decision across only four winemakers in over five decades. The Benchland Select is where that philosophy meets deliberate ambition: a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend drawn from Napa Valley's benchland sites, where alluvial gravel-over-loam soils drain freely and moderate vine stress, concentrating fruit without sacrificing the house's signature freshness.
Grapes were hand-harvested at night (a practice in place since 2004), passed through an optical berry sorter, hand-sorted, destemmed, and given a pre-fermentation cold soak to soften skins and build tannin texture before fermentation. The wine then aged 22 months in French oak at 60% new — a notably higher new-oak commitment than the estate Napa Valley Cabernet (48% new, 17 months), signaling a deliberate step up in structural ambition within the same house style.
What separates this expression is that extended barrel regime applied to a producer philosophically opposed to extraction for its own sake — the result is oak-derived architecture in service of food compatibility, not power. The 2017 vintage delivered structured, age-worthy reds across Napa Valley, and this bottling carries a drinking window that rewards patience through the late 2020s.
