−12%When Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi formalized their joint venture in 1980, they transferred a 35-acre block of the historic To Kalon vineyard — the so-called 'Q Block' — into the new estate, anchoring Opus One to one of Napa's most storied alluvial fans. Overture is the non-vintage second selection, assembled from lots that did not enter the grand vin, giving it access to the same Oakville estate fruit without the vintage-specific constraints of the flagship.
The four estate parcels sit on the western bench of Oakville AVA, where alluvial material washed from the Mayacamas Mountains produces gravelly clay loam with volcanic components. Cool afternoon air drawn through from San Pablo Bay creates a sharp diurnal shift that preserves acidity in fruit that would otherwise over-ripen at this latitude. Vines are farmed organically on low Guyot trellising with tight spacing, and grapes are hand-harvested before dawn.
Vinification follows the flagship protocol exactly: each parcel ferments separately in one of approximately 50 dedicated stainless-steel tanks, with all movement by gravity — no pumps at any stage. Native yeasts isolated from each vineyard site drive fermentation. Aging proceeds in 100% new French oak in the semi-circular underground Grand Chai, followed by additional bottle aging before release. Fining is by fresh egg whites; filtration status is undisclosed.
What distinguishes Overture categorically is its NV construction: blending across multiple harvests allows winemaker Michael Silacci to target a consistent structural profile — Bordeaux Left Bank restraint, graphite-edged tannin architecture — rather than chasing any single year's character. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant Bordeaux blend that drinks closer to a Pauillac than to the Oakville blockbuster norm.
