A Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (roughly 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc) from a Graves Cru Classe vineyard on gravelly plateau soils in Pessac-Leognan, giving structured, age-worthy reds alongside the estate's well-regarded white wine.
The property's name layers two owners into one: vines were first planted on the gravelly "Lafitte" site in 1365 by the Verrier du Boscq family, and in 1720 Scottish merchant George Smith bought the estate and added his surname to it, producing the compound name Smith Haut Lafitte still used today; it was recognized as a Cru Classe de Graves in both the 1953 and 1959 Graves classification (the Graves classification, not the 1855 Medoc classification).

Château Smith Haut Lafitte's 2017 Pessac-Léognan is a classically structured Bordeaux red blend anchored by 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, with supporting Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine displays a medium-full body with medium-high tannins and balanced acidity, offering primary notes of blackcurrant and dark plum fruit. Secondary oak and cedar notes provide structure and elegance, while tertiary tobacco and leather complexity emerges with bottle age. A food-friendly expression of the Left Bank terroir, suited to grilled red meats, lamb, and aged cheeses.
