John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000 with a winemaker's logic applied to Scotch — no owned stills, only obsessive cask selection — and Flaming Heart has become the house's most structurally ambitious expression of that philosophy. This 25th Anniversary Edition draws from a multi-distillery malt roster anchored by Laphroaig, Caol Ila, Talisker, Glen Elgin, and Balmenach, each contributing a distinct register: coastal peat smoke, maritime iodine, and a spiced Highland core. Rather than a single terroir, the architecture is deliberate contrast — heavily peated Islay malts colliding with a custom French oak-matured Highland malt blend, the French oak heads commissioned by Compass Box to specified toast levels after the SWA banned their inner-stave technique in 2006. Component casks span ex-bourbon hogsheads, refill barrels, and bespoke French oak, with no added colouring and non-chill-filtration preserving the full texture of the assembled parcels. The defining transgression here is the French oak integration: where most peated blended malts rely on American oak to soften smoke, Compass Box drives spice and tannin structure directly into the peat, producing a tension that no standard Islay bottling replicates. Released in numbered batches with varying component parcels, this anniversary edition is a non-vintage, recipe-driven limited release — no drinking window applies in the conventional sense, but the architecture rewards time in glass.
