Balblair 18 Year (700 ml)
฿9,695
When Balblair relocated half a mile north in 1872–1894 to meet the Inverness–Ardgay railway, the distillery's founders insisted on piping the Allt Dearg burn five miles from the Edderton Hills to the new site — the same water source drawn since 1790, a deliberate act of continuity that defines the house's commitment to unhurried craft. That same patience governs the 18 Year: ex-bourbon hogsheads provide primary maturation, followed by a finishing period in first-fill Spanish oak Oloroso butts, all resting on beaten-earth floors in dunnage warehouses dating to 1894, where low evaporation rates preserve spirit integrity across nearly two decades.
The distillery's squat, onion-shaped pot stills with wide necks and no reflux bowls — run deliberately slowly over approximately 4.5 hours per spirit-still charge — build a dense, ester-forward new make that demands time to resolve. Fermentation in Oregon pine washbacks for ~62 hours and mashing for clear worts lay the fruity foundation. The result is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, natural colour. The special feature here is structural: Balblair fills casks at ~68.5% ABV versus the Scottish industry norm of ~63.5%, meaning the spirit matures more slowly and retains more of its original character — the sherry-butt finish amplifies rather than overwrites. The 18 Year sits in the current age-statement core range introduced in 2019, representing the distillery's mature-era expression at its most textured.
