John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000 with a deliberate provocation: treat Scotch blending as a winemaker treats assemblage — selecting specific casks by distillery parcel, specifying custom toast levels on French oak, and publishing more about what's inside the bottle than the industry's regulators preferred. That activist posture twice drew formal challenges from the Scotch Whisky Association, first over French oak inner staves in The Spice Tree (2005–2006), then over full label transparency in 2015.

The Lost is a limited-edition blended malt drawing on Compass Box's bonded stocks held across Scotland — malt whiskies sourced from distilleries spanning the Highlands and Islay, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon American oak and custom-specified French oak casks with heavily toasted heads. Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill-filtered, with no added colouring, the whisky retains the natural texture and vibrancy that commercial blending norms routinely strip away. The French oak influence — Compass Box's most persistent technical signature — contributes spiced, resinous depth that ex-bourbon alone cannot deliver.
