When Maurice Hennessy created the VSOP designation, he was codifying a standard the rest of the cognac world would eventually adopt — a pattern of category invention that began with Richard Hennessy founding the house on the banks of the Charente in 1765. That same river still governs aging: eaux-de-vie rested in humid riverside chais develop rounder, mellower character, while drier inland cellars push toward greater structural depth.

Sourced from over 1,600 independent partner growers across the four premier crus — Grande Champagne's shallow clay-limestone chalk, Petite Champagne, the clay-flint of Borderies, and Fins Bois — the VSOP draws on a reserve of approximately 350,000–470,000 Limousin-oak casks, the world's largest cognac inventory. Staves come from Hennessy's own forests, trees felled only after 80+ years of growth.

The house's technical transgression is deliberate: unlike Martell, Hennessy distills both with and without lees, and reintroduces heads and tails into the brouillis before the second Charentais pot-still pass, concentrating congeners that produce the signature dark-fruit and rising-spice profile. The Tasting Committee reviews ~10,000 eaux-de-vie annually; the VSOP blend is held to a minimum 4 years aging, bottled at 40% ABV. Eight consecutive generations of the Fillioux family have made every blending decision — an unbroken lineage of over 200 years.
