Richard Hennessy was an Irish officer who founded this house on the banks of the Charente in 1765 — and the expression bearing his name is the direct answer to what eight unbroken generations of the Fillioux Master Blender lineage consider the ceiling of the house's reserves. That continuity is not ceremonial: the same family has assessed every eaux-de-vie in these cellars for over 200 years, and only those aged a minimum of 40 years qualify for this blend.

Sourcing spans the four premier crus — Grande Champagne's shallow clay-limestone chalk (which drives the slow oxidative aging and structural depth at this age tier), Petite Champagne, the clay-flint soils of Borderies, and Fins Bois — with casks rotated across Hennessy's 65 chais, including the humid riverside cellars along the Charente that produce measurably mellower, rounder spirits. The house's own Limousin oak cooperage, drawing from forests purchased roughly 42 years ago where trees must reach 80+ years before felling, provides the French oak barrels that frame this aging.

Production follows Hennessy's deliberate congener-concentration method: double distillation in alembic charentais copper pot stills, with heads and tails reintroduced into the brouillis before the second pass, and distillation conducted both on and off lees — a richer approach than peers who strip lees entirely. The resulting spirit is bottled in a hand-blown crystal decanter, lightly filtered, at standard Cognac AOC ABV. What separates Richard Hennessy from the XO tier is not merely age but selection severity: the Tasting Committee reviews approximately 10,000 eaux-de-vie annually, and only around 10 per 10,000 assessed reach the Paradis tier that feeds this blend.
