Margaux 2019
฿฿฿
Boyd-Cantenac has occupied the same parcel of the Margaux appellation since its classification in 1855, one of the few third growths whose estate boundaries have remained largely intact across two centuries. The vineyard sits on the classic Margaux plateau, where deep beds of Günzian gravel over clay subsoil drain aggressively, stressing the vine roots downward and concentrating phenolics in small-berried Cabernet Sauvignon — the dominant variety in the blend. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the assemblage, supported by Merlot and smaller proportions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, with aging conducted in French oak barriques, a portion of which are renewed each vintage to layer structure without overwhelming the appellation's characteristic aromatic finesse. The 2019 vintage across Bordeaux delivered a long, warm, dry growing season with timely rainfall in spring — conditions that produced exceptional phenolic ripeness and deep colour without sacrificing the cool-night acidity that keeps Margaux wines taut. What distinguishes Boyd-Cantenac within its peer group is its relatively modest production and low profile, meaning bottles reach the market at classified-growth quality without the premium commanded by more publicised neighbours. The 2019 is drinking well now with decanting but carries the structural density to develop further through 2032–2035.
