One By Penfolds Australia Syrah Grenache Mourvedre
฿999
Penfolds has bottled a Southern Rhône-inspired blend since the Bin 138 program, a deliberate transgression from the house's Shiraz-dominant orthodoxy — here, Grenache and Mourvèdre share the frame alongside Shiraz, drawing on Barossa Valley fruit grown in ancient, deep alluvial and sandy loam soils that have never required replanting due to phylloxera-free status. Those soils — low-vigour, heat-retaining, and exceptionally old — push vines toward concentrated, low-yield fruit with a distinctly earthy, ironstone-tinged character that separates Barossa GSM from any Châteauneuf-du-Pape counterpart. Winemaking follows Penfolds' multi-vineyard blending philosophy, with fruit selected across Barossa sub-districts and matured in previously-used oak — the same seasoned barrels that cycle through the broader Penfolds red program — preserving fruit transparency rather than imposing new-wood structure. No single-terroir constraint applies: the blend proportions shift vintage to vintage as Chief Winemaker Peter Gago's team chases fruit quality over formula. What distinguishes this expression within the Penfolds lineup is the Grenache-driven mid-palate generosity and lower structural tension compared to the Shiraz-anchored Bins — a rare moment where the house prioritises plushness over ageability architecture.
