Yalumba Y Series Shiraz

฿800
−11%Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith and still held by the sixth-generation Hill-Smith family, Yalumba made a deliberate institutional commitment to oak control that no Australian peer has matched — operating the only fully functional winery-owned cooperage in the Southern Hemisphere, hand-crafting barrels from French, American, and Hungarian oak on-site. The Y Series Shiraz draws on South Australian fruit, where warm Barossa Valley floor sites and cooler Eden Valley elevations of 400–550 m over shallow, rocky, well-drained soils contribute contrasting registers: the valley floor delivering mid-palate density, the elevated sites lending tension and lift. Winemaking follows the house's minimal-intervention philosophy — wild/spontaneous fermentation initiated in open-top fermenters, some of which date to the 1800s, with oak sourced and crafted through the on-site cooperage. The wine has been 100% vegan since the 2012 vintage, with no animal-derived fining agents used across the entire Yalumba range. What distinguishes the Y Series within its entry-tier category is that it inherits the same winemaking infrastructure and cooperage philosophy as Yalumba's ฿9,000+ flagships — the oak regime simply scales down. Drink now through the near term for primary dark-fruited character, or hold briefly for integration.
