Winemaker Seletion Cabernet Sauvignon
฿
Kessler-Zink's Winemaker Selection Cabernet Sauvignon represents a deliberate transgression in Rheinhessen, Germany's largest wine region and traditionally a stronghold of Riesling and Silvaner. The estate sources fruit from Rheinhessen's warmest microclimates, where sandy-loam soils and south-facing slopes accumulate sufficient heat to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon to phenolic maturity—a feat rare north of the Rhine.
The wine undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve aromatic precision while extracting color and tannin structure. Aging in neutral oak (rather than new French barrels) allows the fruit character to dominate, a choice that underscores the winemaker's confidence in the vintage's ripeness rather than oak-driven complexity. This restraint is characteristic of quality-focused German producers working outside their regional comfort zone.
The special feature lies in its identity crisis resolved: a German-made Cabernet that neither apes Bordeaux nor apologizes for its continental origin. Rheinhessen's diurnal temperature swings—warm days, cool nights—preserve acidity and freshness that would be lost in warmer regions, creating a wine with ripe fruit but structural tension.
Drink 2024–2029. Best served at 16–17°C to reveal both fruit and mineral tension.
