Clos Pegase occupies a benchland site in Calistoga's volcanic terroir, where basaltic soils and morning fog create the thermal conditions that define northern Napa's Cabernet character. The winery's architecture—designed by postmodern architect Michael Graves—sits above vineyards planted on slopes with excellent drainage and afternoon sun exposure.

This Cabernet Sauvignon is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged in French oak for 18–20 months, with a portion of new wood contributing vanilla and spice structure without overwhelming the fruit. The blend typically includes small percentages of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, softening the tannin profile while maintaining the wine's aging potential.

The expression balances Napa's ripe dark-fruit signature with the mineral grip characteristic of volcanic soils—a wine built for 8–12 years of cellaring, though approachable in its youth. Vintage variation is notable; recent releases show the house's commitment to restraint over extraction.
