When Maxime Cheurlin took over Domaine Georges Noëllat in 2010 at age twenty, he inherited vines whose fruit had been sold in bulk to Louis Jadot and Joseph Drouhin for the previous two decades — meaning every bottle bearing the domaine label is, in effect, a post-2010 creation built from scratch by a winemaker still in his twenties. That origin story matters technically: Cheurlin had no inherited house style to preserve, only terroir to interrogate. Les Monts Luisants sits at the upper, cooler reaches of Morey-Saint-Denis, where the limestone content in the argilo-calcaire soils intensifies and the clay thins — conditions that push Pinot Noir toward aromatic precision and structural tension rather than the plush mid-palate weight found lower on the slope. Cheurlin's vinification is built around restraint: 100% destemmed, native-yeast fermentation, rare and gentle punch-downs in the 'infusion' mode he describes as the antithesis of extraction. French oak aging runs 14–20 months, with new-oak proportion calibrated to appellation level; the cellar is actively cooled to delay and slow malolactic fermentation — a deliberate technique adopted from around 2017 that critics including Allen Meadows credit with adding precision. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. What distinguishes this cuvée within the Noëllat portfolio is its address: Monts Luisants is the northernmost and highest Premier Cru in Morey, sharing a geological boundary with Musigny's limestone shelf — an outlier site that produces a more mineral, cooler-toned expression than the domaine's Vosne heartland. The 2022 vintage shows fine intensity and refinement consistent with cask-tasting reports from the domaine.
