−6%When Thibault Liger-Belair reclaimed the family's négociant legacy in 2001, he became the first vigneron in nine generations of a lineage that once owned La Tâche before selling it to DRC in 1929 — and he chose to make his name not on Grand Cru paper, but on a Premier Cru that critics have long argued deserves promotion. Les Saint-Georges sits at the southern tip of Nuits-Saint-Georges on clay-limestone soils threaded with dense white pebbles (chaille), a geological signature that drives the site's characteristic mineral tension. Vines planted in 1944 — in a climat documented since the year 1000 — deliver low yields and concentrated, architecturally precise fruit.
In the cellar, Thibault's deliberate break from Nuits-Saint-Georges' historically muscular archetype is codified in technique: triple sorting (at vine, before and after destemmer), native yeast fermentation in open-top vessels, and a philosophy of gentle infusion over extraction — minimal pumpovers, minimal pigeage. Whole-cluster inclusion is calibrated per vintage. Aging runs 14–18 months in lightly charred (5–7 minute) barrique, with oak species and grain selected post-fermentation and dried a minimum of three years for silkier tannin integration; new oak is capped at 50%. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The special feature here is institutional: Les Saint-Georges is the centrepiece of an active reclassification campaign (ongoing since 2007) to elevate the climat to Grand Cru — a promotion the wine's structure and site history make a compelling case for. No vintage-specific critic scores are confirmed for 2021, but the vintage's naturally moderate yields and freshness suit Thibault's precision-first approach; drink from 2026 through 2035+.
