Penfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold at Magill Estate, but it is the Kalimna property in the Barossa Valley — 290 hectares of phylloxera-free ancient alluvial and deep sandy loam soils — that anchors the house's red wine identity. Those old, low-vigour soils force vine roots deep, concentrating the dark-fruited, generously structured character that defines Barossa Shiraz at this address.

The Barossa Valley Explorer Dual Pack presents two expressions built on Penfolds' defining winemaking doctrine: deliberate multi-vineyard blending that prioritises fruit quality and house consistency over single-terroir expression — a direct inversion of Old World château thinking. Across the range, reds are aged in American oak hogsheads (slightly larger than Bordeaux barriques), a vessel choice pioneered by Max Schubert after his 1949 Bordeaux visit and maintained across nearly 180 years of only four Chief Winemakers.

What makes this pack unusual within its category is the explicit educational framing: two distinct Barossa expressions side by side allow direct comparison of how Penfolds' blending philosophy shifts register — from the Bin 138 Shiraz/Grenache/Mourvèdre Southern Rhône-inspired structure to the Cabernet-Shiraz architecture of Bin 389, matured in barrels previously used for Grange itself, transferring residual oak character without additional new-wood extraction.

As a non-vintage dual pack, this is designed for immediate accessibility rather than extended cellaring, delivering the Penfolds mid-palate richness and fruit generosity that define the house style at its most approachable Barossa register.
