Yalumba Distinguished Sites Paradox Shiraz
฿2,300
Founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith and still in the hands of the sixth-generation Hill-Smith family, Yalumba operates the only winery-owned cooperage in the Southern Hemisphere — a fact that gives every barrel in this cellar a provenance no peer in Australia can replicate. The Distinguished Sites Paradox Shiraz draws on Barossa Valley floor fruit, where low-elevation, warm growing conditions and the region's characteristic deep clay-loam soils over ironstone push Shiraz toward dense mid-palate richness, dark-fruited concentration, and the plush, sun-warmed tannin structure the valley is known for. Fermentation begins with wild/spontaneous yeasts in open-top fermenters, some dating to the 1800s, a deliberate choice that preserves site character over technical uniformity. Aging follows in French, American, and Hungarian oak sourced and crafted through the on-site Yalumba Cooperage, giving the winemaking team precise control over toast, grain, and extraction that commercially sourced barrels cannot offer. What sets this expression apart within the Yalumba range is its single-site focus under the Distinguished Sites banner — a departure from the house's celebrated inter-regional blending philosophy, isolating one Barossa address rather than building complexity across regions. The 2019 vintage delivered structured, aromatic Barossa reds with the tannin backbone for medium-term cellaring through the late 2020s.
