Monpertone Monferrato Rosso DOC
฿฿
SalePrunotto's Monpertone anchors itself in the rolling hills of Monferrato, Piedmont's secondary plateau southeast of Alba, where clay-limestone soils and moderate elevation (250–350m) create conditions for mid-weight reds with natural acidity. The estate, founded in 1904, has long favored Barbera as the backbone—a varietal that thrives in Monferrato's continental climate, delivering bright cherry acidity without the extraction demands of Nebbiolo.
This DOC blend typically combines Barbera with Dolcetto, fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve aromatic freshness, then aged briefly in neutral oak or concrete to avoid oak dominance. The result is a wine built for food rather than contemplation: medium body, forward acidity, and tannins that frame rather than grip. Monpertone's transgression is its refusal of Piedmont's prestige hierarchy—it sits outside the DOCG zones, yet delivers the regional character at a fraction of Barolo or Barbaresco pricing.
Vintage variation is modest; drink current releases within 4–6 years of harvest for optimal freshness.
